Where the OG Story Begins
Few names in cannabis culture carry the weight of OG Kush.
Its history is surrounded by stories, competing theories, and a certain amount of mystery. What is generally agreed upon is that the cultivar emerged from Florida cannabis culture in the early-to-mid 1990s before making its way west to Los Angeles in 1996. Matt “Bubba” Berger brought cuttings from Florida to Josh Del Rosso, better known as Josh D, who helped preserve, cultivate, and distribute the plant in Southern California.
The exact genetics remain debated. One commonly cited theory connects OG Kush to Chemdawg, Lemon Thai, and Hindu Kush genetics, while other accounts describe a different lineage. Even the meaning of “OG” has been debated, with interpretations including “Original Gangster” and “Ocean Grown.”
But perhaps that mystery is part of what makes OG so compelling.
It wasn’t created by a luxury fragrance house or introduced through a traditional marketing campaign. Its reputation was built organically—through growers, communities, culture, and an aroma people could recognize almost immediately.
By the late 1990s and 2000s, OG Kush had become deeply influential in Southern California cannabis culture and would go on to contribute genetics to an enormous family of cultivars. Leafly has described OG Kush as a genetic backbone of West Coast cannabis varieties.
